Beyond The Makeup Brush’s Must Have Fall Pieces!

First, I would like to apologize for being MIA for awhile. I have had a lot of things happen in my life this year. But I’m back and ready to give you the latest tips in fashion and makeup and advice about life in general. We all could use that right? I love Fall it’s one of my favorite seasons. What’s not to like? Cool, crisp air, any thing pumpkin spice, cozy sweaters, hayrides and football!!

Some of my favorite Fall must have staples of 2019 are as follows: this year it’s all about mixing hard with soft pieces. One must have piece you should incorporate in your closet is a good cargo jacket. Whether its navy, khaki, or army green it’s a great addition to any wardrobe. I am wearing “Ana” cargo jacket in navy from JcPenney’s. A light flowy blouse is another great staple that can be dressed up or down. I chose a floral print from “Alyx” also from JcPenneys. Ladies, skinny jeans are still all the rave this Autumn. I added a pair of black skinny jeans from “Ana” to finish the look.

What girl can’t have enough ankle boots.. not me!! This Autumn it’s still about ankle boots whether they are lace up, chunky heel, buckle or strap. I am wearing “Tom’s” lace up wedge ankle boots in dark grey purchased from “Stitch Fix.” Pictured below I am carrying another must have piece this year a small denim clutch by “Bad Element” from JcPenney’s. So my beauties out there go get yourself some Fall must have staples and you will be wardrobe ready this Season.

“Spring Cleaning Your Skin Beyond The Makeup Brush Shares Our Skin Routine Secrets!”

Products featured clockwise: Bliss ex-glosion eye cream, CeraVe moisturizing cream, No7 Restore and Renew Face and Neck Multi Action Serum, Bliss Jelly Glow Peel, Health Pro Exfoliating/Cleansing Face Brush, Pixi Skintreats Rose Oil Blend, Dove exfoliating soap.

Spring is a time of rejuvenation and rebirth. Your skin routine needs some renewal as well. Beyond The Makeup Brush wants to share our favorite skincare products to get your skin spring ready! I love trying the latest skin products out there but try to keep main staples that I use year round. One of those beauty product staples is Dove soap. I have used Dove soap since I was in high school, which was recommended by my dermatologist. Gals, you can’t go wrong with Dove soap its gentle on your skin and is very affordable.

One beauty product you definitely want to invest in is a facial cleansing brush. One great brand is Clarisonic or if you’re a beauty on a budget check outHealth Pro Exfoliating/Cleansing Face Brush which can be purchased on Ebay for $39.95. I use my brush about once a week to get all the impurities out. It tends to dry out my skin if I use it more than that.

Another to die for favorite of mine is Pixi Skintreats Rose Oil Blend which can be found at your nearest Target store for around $24.99. This is another great essential you must have in your daily skin routine. I tend to get really dry skin due to some of the prescription acne creams I use. A little dab of this in the morning before I put on my makeup does the trick.

I just recently discovered the Bliss beauty line and wanted to see what all the hype was about. I purchased the Bliss Jelly Glow Peel and Bliss Ex-Glosion Eye Cream at Target for $9.99 and $17.99. I really like the Jelly Glow Peel if your looking for a a gentle cleanser this is a girl’s dream! I’m starting to use the Glosion Eye Cream at night and so far I haven’t seen any noticeable results but it is a nice gentle cream as well.

Drum roll please…last but definitely not least are my two favorite beauty products No. 7 Restore and Renew Face and Neck Multi Action Serum which can be purchased at Target for $33.99. This serum is a beauty blogger’s must have serums. It is targeted to treat both the face and neck with clinically proven results. I have been using it for about a month now and have noticeably seen results on my neck and face. I use this serum at night after I wash my face and put a dab on my neck and face with an upward motion. The price is a little on the high side but for a retinol formula it’s definitely adorable!

My second must have beauty product I can’t live with out is CeraVe Moisturizing Cream which can be purchased at Target for $10.19. I can’t say enough good things about this cream. It is dermatologist recommended and is great for dry skin. I have used this cream for a few years now and will never go back to another. It is a thick cream that is fragrance and oil free that soothes dry and irritated skin. So there you have it friends now go do some spring cleaning!!

“Kansas City Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2019 Preview Part 2.”

“Beyond The Makeup Brush” was lucky enough to get an invite to this exclusive Kansas City Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2019 Preview on September 26th at Union Station in Kansas City.  The Wednesday night event showcased seven designers from the Midwest to Iran.  There was a mixture of  beads, lace, mosaic textures to plaids with pops of color displayed down the runaway this year.

“H. Art Studios” by Lauren Hansen was first down the runaway. This talented Midwestern girl from Iowa is only 17 years of age! Her first look that came down the runaway was a show stopping couture wedding gown.  Lauren’s designs use beautiful beading to give it that couture look.  Lauren Hansen is one talented designer to watch. Lauren’s designs can be found at H. Art Studios

Next down the runaway was “MAANG” by Yasi Fayal.  “MAANG” means Moon in Farsi. Yasi is an Iranian fashion and jewelry designer.  Her pieces are inspired by geometric and mathematical shapes and patterns.  She uses her background in engineering to help inspire her pieces. She wants people to really think about her fashion in a different way.  If you want to get to know more about this gifted designer’s unique aesthetic check her out at on her instagram page @maangstudios

Coming down the runaway with a Californian “fun in the sun” feel was designer Amy Ellie with “Ideologie The Label.” Amy is an apparel and textile designer who also happens to be a student at Michigan State University.  Her design aesthetic definitely gave you that Spring/Summer feel with the off the shoulder blouses and halter tops. I loved the mixture of patterns she used to create her neutral color scheme.  I can’t wait to see more from this talented designer!

Local Kansas City  jewelry designer Clarissa Knighten with “Rissa’s Artistic Designs” dazzled the runaway next with her earthy, edgy and elegant jewelry pieces. Clarissa took a risk in 2017 and left the corporate world to pursue her dream of starting her own jewelry line.  All her pieces are one of a kind and can be custom made to fit your desired look.  She uses everything from beads, gemstones and wires to achieve her unique pieces. Check out more of this creative designer’s pieces at Rissa’s Artistic Design

Wowing the crowd next was  “Venn by Veron” Venn learned her sewing skills from local tailors from Nigeria. Her Spring/Summer 2019 Collection is more Avant Garde yet wearable.   Venn’s use of colorful mosaic tiles really set her pieces a part and make her overall collection very cohesive.  Venn’s collections can be found on instagram @veroniq1760

Lastly,  the audience was wowed by “Kalon By Kayla” Mikayla Tjeerdsma learned to sew at the early age of 9.  Her Spring/Summer 2019 collection incorporates a mixture of patterns and a touch of color to give  that  summertime feel. Mikayla’ cohesive collection was styled to perfection. I guarantee we will be seeing bright chunky sandals,  braids, braids, and more braids coming Spring 2019.  I cannot wait to see what this talented designer has up her sleeve next.

Stay Tuned for KCFW Fall/Winter 19 Collection!  Beyond The Makeup Brush will be there to cover the hottest Fall and Winter designs.

“Kansas City Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2019 Preview Part One.”

If you’re a fan of the popular show “Project Runway” like I am then you have gotten a glimpse of what New York Fashion Week is about.  Fashionistas, Kansas City is the new hub for local, national and international designers to show their unique designs.  I was utterly amazed at the local talent that came out this year .

Kansas City Fashion Week started in March of 2011 and since has boasted 14 seasons of  talented local, national and international designers.  “Beyond the Make Up Brush” was lucky enough to get an invite to this exclusive four day event with a finale featuring well renowned American fashion designer Rachel Roy.  This years’ Spring/Summer 2019 preview took place at Union Station and did not disappoint.  We attended the Wednesday night show on September 26th which included seven local, national, and international designers each with a very unique aesthetic.

IMG_2539 (8).jpg

The Wednesday night show tends to be a bit more casual.  When we arrived we saw the step and repeat set up where you could get your photo taken.  Fashion forward attendees appeared in attire from jeans and motorcycle jackets to jumpsuits with heels to little black dresses.  If you like to people watch this is the place to definitely be.  When we entered the main hall they had various booths set up with the designer’s collections to browse through.  We ran into Crystal Brakhage with “Crystal Brakhage Designs” at her booth.  We were  lucky enough to interview this talented young designer and learn more about her collection.

IMG_2412 (2)

Crystal is from Tobias, Nebraska not really known as the fashion capital of the world. However, this talented designer is making a big name for herself and her designs in the Midwest.   Crystal first picked up a needle and thread about 8 years ago through her 4 H club.  However,  it wasn’t love at first sewing machine.  Crystal actually wanted to do photography but ended up going to 4 H camp and meeting other young designers who had a passion for design.

Crystal has shown her collection in  Des Moines, Kansas City, and Chicago Fashion Week. Crystal’s Spring/Summer 2019 Collection is inspired by pop musician Cardi B and reality star Kim Kardashian’s style.  Her collection is a mix of edgy and street wear.  Crystal used a mix of faux leather and fur in most of her designs to achieve that hip hop feel.  I asked Crystal what advice she would give to new designers starting out and she said to definitely “Be yourself” and do a lot of networking.  She has learned to work with photographers and different social media outlets such as Facebook and Instagram to get her brand out there.  “Beyond The Makeup Brush” can’t wait to see more from this talented young designer. You can check out more of Crystal’s designs at

Leave It Up To Us To Give You Our Must Have Essentials This Fall!!

Fall is definitely one of my favorite seasons.  What’s not to like, everything from warm fuzzy sweaters, pumpkin spice everything, colorful leaves, the smell of crisp air, and ankle boots!!  Beyond The Makeup Brush wants to share our must have essentials for Fall.

Autumn is all about warm shades whether it is dark berry lipsticks, rustic reds or midnight blue nail polishes. Lovelies,  these are the must haves this Fall.  I love “Maybelline Color Sensational” Lip Color in “Blissful Berry” pictured below.  This is a great berry shade for Fall and can be purchased at Target for $3.79.  It’s a rich dark berry color that goes on smooth with a touch of nectar honey.

Now that you beauty babes out there have your Fall lip shade in check.  What about those nails?  This Fall it’s all about the midnight blues, warm beiges and anything jewel toned inspired.  I love OPI’s “Eurso Euro” pictured below.  It tends to be a dark navy blue color when applied.  I purchased this shade at Target for $5.99!

Now that Fall is officially here you still want to keep that flawless face.  What better way to use a CC cream.  I love Thrive Causemetics “Buildable Blur CC Cream” in “Natural Beige.”  If you’re not familiar with what a CC cream it is the best invention since sliced bread!  A CC cream is lighter than a foundation but has more coverage than a BB cream.  If you have red spots, acne scars or an uneven skin tone, CC cream is a great product to correct your imperfections. I love Thrive Causemetics because it is vegan and cruelty free and the company stands for a great cause!!  I purchased this product on their website Thrive Causemetics for $38.00 and it comes with a free makeup bag!  They also carry a BB cream if you have flawless skin and just need a touch of coverage, lucky gals!

IMG_2379 (2).jpg

Chocolate and Gold are a gals best friend! Now you can have both in this incredible must have”Chocolate Gold” eye shadow palette from Too Faced for $49.00.  If you are going to invest in one makeup product for Fall, I would definitely check this palette out.  I purchased this palette at Sephora or can be purchased on Too Faced website as well. The “Chocolate Gold” eye shadow palette is actually infused with real gold and cocoa powder, pretty amazing right? The colors are so pigmented and go on velvety smooth. These shadows are very versatile that allows you to go from a natural daytime look to a dramatic look for a night out!

I’m a huge believer in skin care and any product that keeps your skin soft all year long. I discovered the Pacifica products a few months ago at Target, and absolutely fell in love!  I love the “Pacifica Dreamy Youth Rose and Peptides” body lotion.  It’s not too thick and has a clean rose scent. It’s great to put on right after taking a bath or shower and keeps your skin soft all day long.  I purchased at Target  for $14.99 be sure to check out their whole line of beauty products.

One Fall trend that I absolutely adore is long delicate necklaces you can layer.  I love this  “Filigree Oval Long Necklace” by “A New Day” purchased at Target for $14.99.  Whether its gold, sliver or beaded, long delicate necklaces are staple this Fall season.  Gals get those layers on!!

NYX In Washington D.C. Great Beauty Buys On A Budget!!

This summer I had a short trip to Washington D.C. with my twin sis Annie and my mom.  We were there for a cause close to our hearts, the National Brain Tumor Society representing my late father AJ Kotich, but that’s another blog post I will share later.  We stopped in at The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City in Arlington, Virginia and came across the holy grail of  beauty stores…the ““NYX Professional Makeup” store.   I wish we had one of these in Kansas City!!!

First of all, I have always been a fan of this makeup company.  I first learned about them a few years ago when they started popping up at Target and Walmart.  Here is the story behind this unique company. It was founded in 1999 by Toni Ko and is a subsidiary of L’Oreal company.  It was named after “Nyx”, the Greek goddess of the night. NYX has become wildly successful due to it being marketed as having “department store quality” products while sold at “drugstore prices.” I left Washington with a small haul of some great products. I reviewed a few of my favorites.

The “Angel Veil Skin Perfecting Primer” typically runs anywhere from $11.00 to $15.99 depending on where you purchase it.  This can be purchased directly on the NYX website or at Target or Walmart.  This is a great primer to use if you need a light base for your foundation.  I like the fact that it creates a great base and minimizes the look of your pores. So I give it two thumbs up!! Next is the “NYX Shadow Pigments” in Number 21 which is more of a taupe shade with some glimmer.  I love that it is a loose pigmented shadow.  It goes on smooth and allows you to determine how much coverage you want to use and how dramatic you want to go.  It comes in 24 shades and at $6.50 a pop you can try a variety of different shades.  The shade is pictured below on my arm.

IMG_2334 (3)

Okay, lets continue on this “NYX Cosmetic” journey.  I’m a big believer in concealer.  Unfortunately, I don’t have perfect skin and concealer is definitely my friend. I have tried almost every concealer out there so why not add NYX to the list! I purchased their “Full Coverage Concealer” in the shade “Sand Beige.” This product runs anywhere from $5.00 to $7.69 depending on where you purchase it.  Concealers come in varieties, such as sticks, jars or wands.  I tend to like the jar or stick because I feel like they give better coverage.  I would highly recommend this concealer you get full coverage for a great price!!  Next up, drumroll please…is the “NYX Studio Finishing Powder.”  This product runs anywhere from $8.96 to $10.00 depending on where you purchase it. This product goes a long way.  I use this product if I am going to have a long day and need full coverage.  I use this for “baking” my makeup.  If you are not familiar with the “baking technique” I will share this in another blog post.  Anyway, this is a product to use sparingly because if you use too much you can end up looking like Casper the Friendly Ghost!

IMG_2337 (1).jpg

Last but certainly not least is the “NYX Matte Lipstick” in shade “Natural” shown above.  This shade is a great color that compliments any skin tone. This lipstick can be purchased for about $6.00.  When it comes to makeup products I tend to be drawn to lipsticks, nail polishes and eyeshadows.  Maybe because you are able to change your look each day with just a switch of lip shade or eye shadow.   I love, love lippies!!!  This lipstick has to be one of my favorite brands.  If you want a lipstick that will last all day long and is very pigmented this is the lipstick for you. Now beauties, if you are more of a glossy gal then this is not the lipstick for you.  It is a matte finish but lasts all day long!!  Great news ladies, for the price of $6.00 you can purchase a shade for everyday of the week!! So my friends “Nyx” Products will give you the look of a Greek Goddess or a Babe on a Budget.  So go get “Nyxed!!”

The Art of Collecting Still a Great Hobby!!

IMG_2249 (5).jpg

As a child you might remember having a fascination about collecting a certain toy.  I know I did, for some reason I loved teddy bears.  All kinds from panda bears, polar bears to your standard brown bear.  I’m not sure how it got started, but I remember I collected teddy bears until I was probably a teenager. Now my collection has turned into makeup, shoes and antique perfume bottles.  Collecting an item can be a great hobby if you have a healthy grasp on it.  Remember friends don’t go crazy…everything in moderation!

Why collecting items is good for your soul?  It’s exciting and gives you sense of being and a new passion. Whether it’s seeking out the latest super hero collectible, to hitting local antique stores for that unique perfume bottle.  In a world that has unfortunately become less inactive, collecting something gets your body moving.  I get chills seeking out my new find at local antique stores.  I have found most of my perfume bottles either at local antique stores or have received them as a gift.  If you’re a guy or gal that is hard to shop for having a hobby is also great because your loved one now has an idea of what to get you as a gift.  It can turn out to be a great investment as well.  Who knows, grandma’s dishes she collected and you inherited could now be worth a pretty penny.   Now go seek out your passionate find!!! Happy collecting!

Healthy Tips : How To Relieve Stress and Anxiety in a World Full of Chaos! Annie Kotich(Contributor)

Anxiety and stress happen to be all to common now a days with the hustle and bustle of life. I have suffered from anxiety for years and it is not an easy thing to manage.  My friends, managing stress can be easy with some simple and healthy life changes.

First of all you need to find out the root of what is causing your stress or anxiety.  Is it genetic or is it brought upon by environmental issues such as work, finances, social pressure, or family issues?  When you find the root of the cause of your stress or anxiety it will become easier to figure out how to manage it.

Remember,  I am not a medical professional, just a midwest girl who has suffered from anxiety most of my life. If your anxiety is disrupting your daily life, it’s time to seek help from a therapist or doctor.

Here are some tips I have learned over the years and most recently to reduce my stress and anxiety. Tip #1 purchase a journal or notebook of some kind to organize your tasks for the day.  I tend to get overwhelmed easily with work, bills, and even planning out when to do my blog posts. You can get a cute journal most everywhere, like the one shown above.  I purchased these two at Target for $6.99 each. One for organizing your tasks for the day as well as finances. Tip #2 find  a gratitude journal or jar. Sometimes its easy for us to forget the positive things in our life when there is negativity or stress we deal with on a daily basis.  The purpose of the gratitude journal is to write down a few things each day that you are grateful for.  Some things I’m grateful for are: I had a good night sleep or my day at work went well.  This will allow you to focus on the positive things in your life instead of dwelling on the negative. Plus it’s always fun to get a cute pen to write with!!

IMG_2223 (2)

Tip #3  Purchase essential oils to relieve stress and anxiety.  I am a big fan of these,  lavender oils are known to reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and brain function. You can use lavender oils in a variety of different ways. Use it with a diffuser and put by your bed or family room.  You can sprinkle some on your pillow as well for a good nights sleep.  I’m a big fan of soaking my worries away in a tub. I love sprinkling some in my bath water for a calming effect.  You can also apply lavender oil topically behind your ears for the same benefits. Another great essential oil for anxiety and stress is peppermint. Peppermint oil is known to help with headaches, nausea and opening nasal passages, allergies and more. I use it to help me breath a little better when my anxiety is acting up.  Just add a few dabs under your nose to help open nasal passages.  You can also add to a diffuser as well or dab on your temples to help relieve a tension headache.  I purchased the lavender and peppermint essential oils at Walmart for about $5.33 each. Tip #4 use therapy dough or a stress ball to relieve some of your daily stress.  I purchased “Pinch Me” therapy dough at Barnes and Noble for about $14.95.  This stuff is amazing, just roll it between your fingers when you feel stress coming on.  “Pinch Me” therapy dough is a soft, pliable dough infused with calming aromatherapy. You can even use it while your watching television, reading or in a meeting, anywhere you need to unwind.  Now go live a stress and anxiety free life!!!

Note: If you do find that your stress and anxiety is getting hard to handle on your own, it may be time to seek professional help. You may also confide in a friend or family member for support. There are many free resources available to lend a caring ear.

The Compassionate Ear phone line is a resource for talk support in non-emergency situations (1-866-WARMEAR).

In the event of a safety concern or suicidal thoughts, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 800-273-8255(TALK). Crisis Text Hotline (text 741741).
