It All Starts With A Great Foundation!!

IMG_2173

In life many things start with a strong foundation. This saying is true with your makeup as well.  I have struggled for many years trying to find the right foundation for my skin type.  At one time I probably had 10 or more foundations in hopes of finding the right one. I have combination skin so I tend to get oily on my T-Zone and dry everywhere else. When I breakout I tend to scar easily so I’m always on the look out for a full coverage foundation that lasts all day.

Ladies, I’m here to share my foundation favorites and tips on what to look for in a great foundation! Here are a few of my top picks from high end to drug store foundations. My number pick for anyone that wants full coverage foundation that last all day would be “Kat Von D Lock-It” Foundation pictured above. My twin sis Annie recommended it to me because she absolutely loves Kat’s makeup.  I use the shade 53 in the Medium-Warm Undertone.  It gives you a flawless coverage that lasts all day.  It comes in 30 different shades so you shouldn’t have a problem finding your perfect match.  I do have to say that if you tend to have very dry skin this foundation is probably not for you.  I purchased mine at Sephora for $35 along with this great “PRO Domed Foundation” brush #78 at Sephora for $36.  This is a great brush that is worth the investment. It’s used to apply liquid foundation and gives you that flawless full coverage look.

If you’re a babe on a budget then fear no more I have some great drugstore foundations I highly recommend.  Another full coverage foundation that I absolutely love is” Revlon Colorstay” Foundation.  This can be purchased at any Walmart, Target, or local drugstore for around $7.29.  I have used this foundation for over 15 years and love that it is full coverage, shine free, semi-matte finish and does last up to 24 hours. I use the combination/oily foundation for my combo skin but it also comes in normal and dry skin as well.

The second foundation that I recommend if you don’t need full coverage and don’t mind spending a few extra dollars is “Aveda Mineral Dual Foundation.” This foundation can be applied wet or dry for light or heavy coverage. I do love mineral foundations because they tend to be a little bit lighter and are healthy for your skin. I use this mineral foundation over concealer to get a fuller coverage. Aveda products are sold in salons across the U.S. or you can get online on their website at www.aveda.com for $26.00.  The one thing I am not a fan of is the packaging.  It does not come in a compact because it’s intended to be used in salons with makeup artists with their built in palettes.

Last but definitely not least is “Maybelline’s Fit Me Matte Poreless” foundation which can be purchased at Walmart, Target or any local drugstore for around $7.99. This product gives you that natural look.  So if you don’t need alot of coverage and just want an all over even poreless look I would recommend this foundation for you.  If you go on www.maybelline.com you can take a short survey to find your perfect shade.  I am shade 220 in Natural Beige.  Like anything in life whether its love, your home or your makeup it all starts with a great foundation!

From left to right: Soap & Glory “Sugar Crush Body Scrub,” Bare Republic “Mineral Sunscreen,” Messner Bee Farm “Lip Balm Locket in Lavender and Lemonade.” Soap & Glory “Original Pink Body Spray,” and Soap & Glory “Hand Food Hydrating Hand Cream.”

Beyond the Makeup Brush would like to treat you to some of our favorite must have beauty products to get your skin ready for summer!  I love Soap & Glory body products such as their “Sugar Crush Body Scrub” which has a nice fresh hint of lime scent. It’s great to exfoliate your dead skin after laying out by the pool or at the beach.  Of course you can’t go out in those bright sunrays without some strong SPF.  I’m a big fan of Bare Republic Mineral Sunscreen “Neon Sunscreen Sticks” SPF of 50.  I’m a huge believer in sunscreen all year-long. When I’m out in the sun I definitely use an SPF of at least 40 and tend to use makeup products with some kind of SPF year round.

When it comes to hand lotions I’m a bit of an addict. I absolutely love hand lotion. I  always carry a few small bottles in my handbag with me.  Soap & Glory’s “Hand Food Hydrating Hand Cream” is one of my favorites. It moisturizes your hands so well from first application, with its rose scented silky cream. The scent is to die for!  Of course you can’t go without the Soap & Glory “Original Pink Body Spray, it has a fresh fruity smell and goes on cool and light, perfect for those hot summer nights. I’m a huge supporter of local businesses and  recently came across this small locally owned company the Messner Bee Farm at the Makers Faire here in Kansas City.  I love things that are all natural and locally owned.  I fell in love with their lip balm lockets made out of bee’s wax. The scent of lavender is so calming to me and I’m sure your lips will fall in love with their lavender and lemonade flavor as well!

“Orange you glad it’s summer?”

OPI Nail Laquer in “Cajun Shrimp” can be purchased at Target for $8.69

I’m glad summer is finally here, just wish it wasn’t so hot here in the Midwest!  Speaking of hot, the new “hot” color for nails this summer are shades of orange.  Whether it’s a reddish-orange like the OPI Nail Lacquer in “Cajun Shrimp” or Defy and Inspire in “Spoiler Alert” pictured below. This is more of a tangerine color that reminds me of one of those push up popsicles, doesn’t it? Friends, you’re now ready to hit your local farmer’s market or a hot summer night on the town with one of these great shades.

Defy and Inspire Nail Lacquer in “Spoiler Alert” can be purchased at Target for $7.49

You can always add a little shimmer on top like my nail tech at Stem Hair and Body Salon did with a clear silver shimmer gel polish. Some of my favs are OPI Nail Lacquer in “Happy Anniversary Sparkle” which can be purchased online for $8.69 or Revlon“Stunner” Nail Polish for $4.78 on their website.  So whether you want to add a vibrant sizzling orange pop of paint or a pastel tangerine to your hands and feet, you will be pool ready this summer!

“Whose eyeliner is it anyway?”

My friends, I have been on the search for the perfect eyeliner for years. Specifically, one that has a great pigmented color, is waterproof and lasts all day without running. It has been a ongoing journey until I finally discovered a few brands I absolutely love and think you will too!

The first one that I purchased was Thrive Causemetics “Infinity Waterproof Eyeliner” in the shade “Lauren” which is a black matte color.  It’s the first shade on my arm pictured above. I purchased this on their website for $22 and it comes with a cute makeup bag and built in sharpener.  It states it’s waterproof and smudge proof but after a long 8 or 9 hours of wearing the product it did smudge a little. I did not have to reapply during the day which is good news! I do love this company because all their products are cruelty free, vegan and toxic free. Their mission is “Beauty with a Purpose” for every product that is purchased one is donated to a woman in need “in order to thrive,”  I will continue to purchase from this company… so go check them out!

The second eyeliner that I highly recommend is Chanel “Stylo Yeux Waterproof” long lasting eyeliner for $33. I purchased the shade “Black Shimmer,” it is the second shade on my arm above. The price may seem a little steep but I feel like it’s worth it. This eyeliner is amazing! “Stylo Yeux  Waterproof” is smudge and waterproof and lives up to its product description.  It goes on smooth and lasts all day long!  It comes in 16 shades with a built in sharpener. If you want a soft and subtle eyeliner that doesn’t give you that harsh look this is the liner for you!

My third favorite eyeliner I purchased was Maybelline “Line Works Liquid” eyeliner in the shade black for $5.97 at Walmart . This is the third shade on my arm in the picture above.  I love this eyeliner as well. It’s affordable and stays on all day.  If I know I am going to be outside for awhile or have a long work day ahead  this is my go to liner. This liner is not for the faint of heart. It gives you more of a dramatic appearance and is great to use for a cat eye look. It has a flexible tip that gives you great control and is waterproof.  If you’re on a tight budget I would highly recommend this liner!

Fresh paint with a pop of pink!!!

What girl doesn’t feel pretty in pink?  The latest trend in nails is a pop of pastel shade this summer. Colors trending this season are bright pinks such as the CND Shellac Polish polish shade in “Rose Bud” shown above applied by my friend Jade Brown at Stem Hair and Body Salon and Essie pale pink shade in “Ballet Slippers”  worn by Princess Meghan Markle on her wedding day!

I recently popped into my local Target store and found some great pink shades at affordable prices that will achieve the same summer mani and pedi look. Here are some of my favorites: Defy and Inspire Polish in “Made” for $7.49 and Essie Pale Pink Polishes “Hi Maintenance” and “Muchi Muchi” for $8.99 each. If darker pink is your preference than you will love Essie Polish in “Cascade Cool” and ” Mod Square” for $8.99 available at Target.  Now go get some fresh paint with a pop of pink!!!

“Roses are red violets are blue.. how about a little rose gold for you?”

Rose Gold is the hot new shade this year not only in jewelry, makeup, and shoes but for hair as well!  Whether you’re a blond, brunette or red-head a little pop of rose gold goes a long way!  I wanted a touch of rose color in my hair so my hair stylist Amanda Meyer from Stem Hair and Body Salon added a subtle rose color.  She gave me Surface Pure Blonde Rose shampoo as well to deepen the rose color as needed.  This shampoo can be purchased at your local salon or click on link I provided above.  The color washes out so you can try it for a few days and see how you like it or use on a continuous basis.  So Ladies and Gents “Roses are red and violets are blue, now go get some rose gold on you!”

“Gray Matters!”

IMG_1777 (2).jpg

“Gray Matters” indeed especially to me and my family. My sister, mom and myself are headed to Washington D.C. in a few days to advocate for more funding and research for brain tumor survivors with the National Brain Tumor Society and honor my late father AJ Kotich who died of a brain tumor in 2015.  We are “heading to the hill” to meet with representatives from our state of Kansas to tell my Dad’s story and how there is a need for more funding for research and treatment for brain tumor patients.

I wanted to get ready and “gray up” so I had my nail tech and friend Jade Brown at Stem Hair and Body Salon do my nails in two shades of gray. Jade used CND Shellac Color in “Silver Chrome” and CND Shellac Color in “Asphalt.”  She created the gray ribbon with the “Silver Chrome” color.  The colors are pictured below.  So friends remember “Gray Matters!”

You are “not like ordinary!”

One of my late father’s many quotes that he used and a favorite of mine is “not like ordinary!”  What does this mean? Well it can  be interpreted in many different ways. To me it means that we are all unique and different in our own ways, you my friends are “not like ordinary!” I use this quote in my blog because I want to empower women and men everyday to be yourself and accentuate what makes you different.

We all may have our insecurities and flaws but we need to learn to be proud of how unique and different we all are. For instance, I used to hate the beauty mark on my face. People would always ask me about it and I became so annoyed with having to address the issue.  Later in life, I realized its what makes me unique and hey if Cindy Crawford can make millions from hers then it can’t be too bad right?

So friends, if you have great hair, nice lips, or pretty eyes accentuate those things. Wear your hair down with some great rose gold highlights or wear a bold shade of red on your perfect pout. Consider sweeping on a bright jewel toned shadow to bring out the gold specks in your eyes.  Remember, friends we are “not like ordinary!”

Thrive Causemetics “Warm Neutrals Eyeshadow Palette”: How to achieve this everyday look!

IMG_1699

IMG_6686IMG_1692

I am a huge fan of this Cosmetic Company Thrive Causemetics. I first discovered them about 6 months ago on social media.  This cosmetic company is 100% cruelty free and vegan.  It was founded by Karissa Bodnar who lost her close friend Kristy to cancer at a young age.  Her friend inspired her to create this beauty brand to empower women.  Thrive Causemetics is “Beauty with a Purpose.”  Every product you purchase one is donated to help a woman thrive!  Losing my father a few years ago to brain cancer I am a huge fan of this company and their mission.

I recently purchased their “Perfect Eye Palette in Warm Neutrals” and I absolutely love it!  The shadows are very pigmented so they last all day. These shades compliment all skin tones and eye colors.  If you are going to have one go to shadow palette this is the one to have. I purchased it on their website Thrive Causemetics for $45.00 it comes with a free cute makeup bag as well.  My friend and stylist Jade Brown at Stem Hair and Body Salon achieved the warm neutral look on me above. Below are the steps she did to create this look.

Step 1: Apply the color “Helen” to the outer crease.

Step 2: Apply the color “Frida” on the eyelid.

Step 3: Apply the color “Roseann” to outer corner below the color “Helen” and above the lash line.

Step 4:  Apply the color “Frida” to the inner eyelid and then apply “Winnie” on the center lid.

Step 5:  Apply liner and lashes if desired.  After lashes apply the color “Marlee” above lash line to create a shadow.
